IKEA PAX Wardrobe Installation Guide: DIY or Hire a Pro?

PAX: IKEA's Best-Value and Most Challenging System

The PAX system wins on flexibility — frames, shelves, drawers and doors in any combination. But that same flexibility means a typical PAX project involves over a hundred parts, dozens of screw packs, and frames reaching 201cm or 236cm tall. It ranks among the hardest IKEA builds.

The Three Hardest Parts of a PAX Build

1. Raising Tall Frames Takes Two People

A 236cm frame is nearly impossible to raise safely alone. With Hong Kong's low ceilings, you also need to plan the tilt-up angle or the frame top will hit the ceiling.

2. Sliding Door Alignment Is Precision Work

PAX sliding doors run on tracks and rollers that must be levelled precisely — a few millimetres off causes tilted doors, sticky movement or gaps that will not close. This is where most DIY builds go wrong.

3. Never Skip the Anti-Tip Anchor

IKEA requires PAX to be anchored to the wall. Many Hong Kong flats have concrete or brick walls that need the right drill bits and plugs for a secure fix. With children at home, this step is genuinely life-critical.

Time and Cost Reference

A single frame with hinged doors takes about 1-1.5 hours; a double-frame combination with sliding doors typically takes 2.5-4 hours. Professional pricing depends on frame count, door type (sliding costs more than hinged) and interior fittings.
